Doorbell camera captures moment Nobel Prize winner is told he won

The reaction of a Stanford professor who was named a Nobel Prize-winner in economics was captured early Monday for the world thanks to a doorbell camera and a persistent colleague.

The Nobel Committee apparently had some trouble contacting Paul Milgrom to let him know the winning news, so his neighbor and fellow winner, Robert Wilson, took matters into his own hands. Wilson knocked on Milgrom’s door about 2:15 a.m. to get his colleague’s attention, according to Stanford University.

The prestigious California school posted a video from Milgrom’s Nest doorbell camera to its Twitter account Monday. Wilson knocked and rang the bell several times before Milgrom seemingly woke up. The exchange is heard through the doorbell’s intercom.

“Paul? It’s Bob Wilson,” he said. “You’ve won the Nobel.”

“Wow,” Milgrom responded.

Milgrom’s wife, who is currently in Stockholm, got the notification on her phone when Wilson rang their doorbell and was able to see it live, the university said.

Milgrom and Wilson were both honored for improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction formats, Secretary General Göran Hansson of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Monday.

Milgrom’s work included the analysis of bidding strategies to determine how the format of an auction can give the seller higher expected revenue as bidders gauge the private value others place on the item on sale.

Wilson’s work led to the theory of a common value, which is the best estimate of what an item is worth that bidders then try to set their offers below to avoid overpaying.

Wyze’s new $30 doorbell camera takes on Ring and other video doorbell makers

Wyze adds a doorbell and a thermostat to its growing lineup.

Wyze makes a variety of affordable connected home devices, including the $20 Wyze Cam Indoor the $8 Wyze Bulb and others. Its products aren’t particularly revolutionary, but it tends to offer a lot of the same features and performance as competitors for significantly less money. The startup is continuing that trend with two new smart home product announcements: the Wyze Video Doorbell and the Wyze Thermostat.

Wyze’s Video Doorbell costs $30 — by far the least expensive one I’ve ever come across — and is available for preorder now. The company hasn’t provided pricing for the thermostat yet, but expect something similarly affordable. The Wyze Thermostat will be available for preorder starting Oct. 6.

The doorbell

The Wyze Video Doorbell shares a lot of features and specs with the Wyze Cam Indoor, but it comes in a weatherproof housing. It has 1080p HD resolution, night vision, motion detection, motion alerts, two-way talk and two weeks of free cloud storage.

It’s also hardwired and doesn’t require a hub, unlike the battery-powered Wyze Cam Outdoor.

Your purchase includes one Wyze Chime that you can put wherever you might be out of range of your home’s doorbell chime.

You can preorder the Wyze Thermostat starting Oct. 6.

If you sign up for Cam Plus, you get person alerts and “full-length motion recording.” According to Wyze’s Cam Plus landing page, “Wyze Cams already record 12 seconds of motion every 5 minutes for free. Cam Plus records unlimited motion whenever it’s detected so you capture the full story.”

The Wyze Thermostat features scheduling, Home, Away and Sleep modes,
