Virginia Tech football runs over Duke behind Khalil Herbert’s big night for first 2020 road win | Virginia Tech

“I’m not sure I can put into words how difficult what we’ve been dealing with is,” Fuente said. “Just the uncertainty and the in and out and the last minute changes, but our kids continue to believe in the cause.”

After Duke took a 14-10 lead early in the third quarter, it was Herbert’s 86-yard kick return that provided just the spark Tech needed to get going. Herbert ran it back to the end zone on the return, but a review of the play showed him stepping out of bounds with a sliver of his big toe at Duke’s 16-yard line.

It was the program’s longest return since Demitri Knowles returned a kick 88 yards against Maryland in 2013. Herbert took back another return across midfield in the fourth quarter.

The performance drew Herbert for Heisman tweets from his teammates after the game, which drew a laugh from the running back in his post-game press conference.

“Oh man, nah, no thoughts on that,” Herbert said. “Just trying to celebrate this one with the guys and get back to Blacksburg.”

On the ensuing drive, Burmeister put Tech up 17-14 on a 2-yard run. He extended the team’s lead to 10 points on the next possession with a 14-yard touchdown run. He set up the score with a 56-yard pass down the middle of the field to receiver Tayvion Robinson.

He finished the game 9 of 24 for 163 yards with three touchdowns (one passing) and an interception. He carried the ball 15 times for 54 yards.

Duke vs. Virginia Tech: Live updates, score, results, highlights, for Saturday’s NCAAF game

Game Recap

The Virginia Tech Hokies lost to the Duke Blue Devils when the two teams previously met in September of last year, but they didn’t allow Duke the same satisfaction this time around. The Hokies walked away with a 38-31 victory Saturday.

Virginia Tech’s RB Khalil Herbert was on fire, rushing for one TD and 207 yards on 19 carries. Herbert’s longest run was for 60 yards in the fourth quarter. Another playmaker for Virginia Tech was WR Tayvion Robinson, who returned a punt -17 yards to the end zone in the first quarter.

RB Deon Jackson hadn’t helped Duke’s cause all that much against the Virginia Cavaliers last week, but the same can’t be said for this matchup. The losing side was boosted by Jackson, who punched in two rushing touchdowns. That’s the most rushing touchdowns Jackson has had all year.

The win improved Virginia Tech’s record to 1-0. The Blue Devils’ loss pushed them down to 0-3.

The Hokies are on the road again next week and play against the North Carolina Tar Heels at noon ET Oct. 10 at Kenan Memorial Stadium. If the game is anything like Virginia Tech’s 43-41 victory from their previous meeting October of last year, the scorekeeper will be kept real busy. As for Duke, they will face off against the Syracuse Orange at 12:30 p.m. ET next week at Carrier Dome.

Virginia Tech vs Duke Live, The last time Florida rose to No. 3 in the AP Top 25 rankings, its opponent in its next game was South Carolina and the Gators throttled the Gamecocks 44-11 in 2012. Ironically, that was during Will Muschamp’s most successful of three seasons as the UF’s coach. Now with Florida (1-0) ranked No. 3 for the first time since then, the Gators’ opponent is South Carolina again. This time, Muschamp will be on the opposite sideline attempting to direct the Gamecocks to another marquee October upset.

South Carolina (0-1) beat then-No. 3 Georgia on the road in October 2019, giving Muschamp his best victory of an otherwise dismal season that placed him on the hot seat. Guiding his team to another such victory would do wonders for the coach who owns a 26-26 record in the fifth season of his second gig as an SEC East coach.afdg

But beating Florida will require slowing down an offense that set a school record by racking up 642 yards in a season-opening win against Ole Miss last week. The Gators defense looked susceptible in the team’s 51-35 victory over the Rebels, however, which will put the onus on a revamped South Carolina offense to keep up in what could be a high-scoring affair.agfdg

Florida: Kyle Trask threw for six touchdowns against Ole Miss as he picked up where he left off during a prolific 2019 season. The redshirt senior’s 416 passing yards were the most by a Florida quarterback against an SEC foe

Virginia Tech down 21 players, including top four cornerbacks, vs. Duke

Virginia Tech down 21 players, including top four corners, vs. Duke originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Virginia Tech played without 21 players and two full-time coaches Saturday against Duke, the second-straight week that the Hokies were forced to take the field down a significant chunk of their roster.

The team has dealt with coronavirus-related issues for weeks but didn’t specify whether the inactive players were scratched due to COVID-19. In their season-opening win over NC State last week, the Hokies played without 23 of their players.

Though it had more players suited up Saturday, the losses Virginia Tech sustained — particularly in the secondary — were brutal: Each of their top four cornerbacks (Jermaine Waller, Armani Chatman, Brion Murray and Devin Taylor) as well as starting safety Divine Deablo didn’t play. Waller was out last week but the other four were new scratches.

Defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton, who works closely with the safeties, and cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith were out as well.

Fewer college football programs have dealt with more personnel losses than the Hokies so far this season. With the country’s longest active streak of 27 straight seasons with a bowl appearance on the line, Virginia Tech is stretched just about as thin as possible trying to keep that feat going for another year.

Duke vs. Virginia Tech Live updates Score, results, highlights, for Saturday’s NCAA Football game

Considering their sizeable disadvantage in the spread, the Duke Blue Devils can expect to have a real challenge on their hands on Saturday. Duke and the Virginia Tech Hokies will face off in an ACC battle at 4 p.m. ET at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. The Blue Devils stagger in desperate for their first win of the season.

Duke scored first but ultimately less than the Virginia Cavaliers in their contest on Saturday. Duke lost to Virginia on the road by a decisive 38-20 margin. No one had a standout game offensively for Duke, but they got scores from TE Noah Gray and TE Jake Marwede. One of the most thrilling moments was Marwede’s 55-yard TD reception in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech took care of business in their home opener. They made easy work of the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday and carried off a 45-24 victory. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Hokies had established a 37-17 advantage. They can attribute much of their success to RB Khalil Herbert, who rushed for one TD and 104 yards on six carries.

Virginia Tech’s defense was a presence as well, as it embarrassed NC State’s offensive line to sack the quarterback six times for a loss of 21 yards. Leading the way was DL Justus Reed and his two sacks. Those were the first sacks for Reed through Week 4.

Virginia Tech’s win lifted them to 1-0 while Duke’s loss dropped them down to 0-3. Giving up seven turnovers, Duke had had trouble holding onto the ball. We’ll see if Virginia Tech can exploit that vulnerability.
