This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide on everything you need to know and how to make sure you get the best deal.

Get ready, online shoppers. Amazon Prime Day 2020 starts tomorrow! The two-day sales event kicks off at midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 13, which means you’re about to see some of the best prices ever on certain Amazon Fire tablets. When the official big day arrives, the Fire HD 10, Amazon’s best tablet, will drop down to just $80 ($70 off), the lowest price we’ve seen for it.

Amazon also announced that the Kids Edition of its entry-level 7-inch Fire will cost $60, which is $40 off its list price of $100. The Fire Kids Edition includes a case and a year of Amazon’s Kids Plus subscription service, a $36 value.

It’s not clear whether the Fire HD 8 or the HD 8 Plus will also be on sale, but we’ll keep an eye on their prices since Amazon often slips previously unannounced deals on its devices into Prime Day.

This is the Goldilocks in Amazon’s line and our current CNET Editors’ Choice in the category. Here are some things we love about the Kindle Paperwhite:

  • It’s 10% thinner and lighter than the previous version.
  • It has a “flush-front” design with a back made of a softer, grippy material instead of hard plastic.
  • It’s a fully waterproof Kindle, like the high-end Kindle Oasis, and has a plastic screen that Amazon says is shatter- and scratch-resistant.
  • It has built-in Bluetooth, so you can download Amazon Audible audiobooks and listen to them with wireless headphones.

Note that Amazon could update the Kindle Paperwhite in 2020 (it was released in Nov. 2018). If and when that happens, it’s unclear how much of an upgrade

Verizon adds 8-inch TCL Tab to its Android tablet lineup

TCL Tab 8

You might recognize the TCL brand from its value-priced Roku TVs sold through Amazon, Best Buy and the like, but it’s been a player in the mobile space through its manufacturing of phones for the likes of Alcatel and BlackBerry. In 2020, the Chinese company has moved to release Android phones under its own moniker, which have been well-reviewed by ZDNet’s own reviewers (here and here). Next up: launching into the tablet market through a partnership with Verizon.

Whereas it’s selling its TCL 10 Pro and 10L smartphones unlocked in the U.S., it’s taking a different approach with its Tab 8 tablet by hooking up with a wireless carrier. At $199.99, or $8.33 per month for 24 months, the 8-inch slate is Verizon’s cheapest tablet offering, about three dollars per month cheaper than an 8.4-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Though the Galaxy Tab has a slightly bigger screen and a much better known brand, the Tab 8 doesn’t compare unfavorably with it despite the lower price. It has a full HD display (1,920×1,200 resolution), equivalent claimed battery life of 17 hours (thanks to a slightly larger 5,500mAh battery), and the same 32GB of built-in storage. Both are powered by octa-core processors, though the Tab 8 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 CPU compared to the Galaxy Tab’s homegrown Exynos 7904 chip.

The Tab 8 does come with Android 10 pre-installed (as opposed to Android 9 on the Galaxy Tab) and not surprisingly features built-in 4G LTE connectivity, along with 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi for when you don’t need a cellular signal. It also comes with the expected accoutrements for any tablet worth its salt, such as 5-megapixel front-facing and 8-megapixel rear-facing cameras and SD card slot for additional storage.

The Tab 8 is currently available exclusively through Verizon, though it will

The Air uses the A14 Bionic chip which is expected to be in the iPhone 12, making the iPad Air faster than even the iPad Pro, though the enhanced display, Face ID and greater graphical capabilities of the Pro will still appeal to those who want the most powerful tablet.

The 10.9in display, compatibility with the Magic Keyboard accessory and Apple Pencil (second-generation), the all-new and colorful design with all-screen front have meant the new tablet is highly anticipated.

So, when exactly can you buy one?

Recent tweets from reliable analysts have suggested it’s very nearly here. Here’s what we know.

When Apple unveils its latest products, including HomePod mini and four different models of the iPhone 12, this Tuesday, October 13. So, that might be the perfect time for Apple to announce when the new iPad Air will be on sale. And, since the iPhones are expected to use the same chip as the iPad Air, it’s a great chance to big up the capabilities of the processor all over again.

Respected leaker Jon Prosser has said that Tuesday’s event is when the date for the iPad Air going on sale will be revealed.

Amazon has come a long way from the first Kindle Fire tablet. The Amazon Fire HD 10 is Amazon’s biggest tablet with a 10-inch screen size and powerful speakers (it now charges via USB-C). Just like its smaller 8-inch sibling, the Fire HD 8, the tablet is packed with benefits for Prime subscribers, making it easy for members to stream and download movies, TV shows and games. The Fire tablets don’t use a pure version of Android, but instead Amazon’s Android-based Fire operating system, and pull apps from the Amazon App Store. You can still get apps from Google Play, but you’ll have to install the store yourself — meaning gaming enthusiasts have access to all of their favorite mobile games for an excellent gaming tablet experience.

This huge rugged smartphone could replace your outdoor tablet – and at a low price

The Oukitel WP8 Pro doesn’t necessarily have any unique selling points that really wowed us, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a solid device – plus, it’s available at 40% off.

A balanced specification sheet, coupled with a great price means it’s an attractive proposition for anyone looking for a rugged smartphone that can double as an outdoor, waterproof tablet.

Its main selling point is a big 6.49-inch HD+ display, which is just slightly smaller than the 6.88-inch display on the BlackView BV6100.

Add in 4GB of RAM, 64GB onboard storage, Android 10, a massive 5Ah battery, NFC and IP68/69K/MIL-STD-810G and suddenly you have a rather enticing rugged smartphone indeed.

Granted, the entry level Mediatek Octacore CPU and 16-megapixel triple camera sensor might raise a few eyebrows, but these are acceptable compromises given the price.

We’ve been following Oukitel for quite some time now and it has surprised us with a few of its models – especially the WP6, which sports a massive 10Ah battery.

We are still yet to see a 5G rugged smartphone, nearly two years after the technology first hit the scene, although Oukitel rivals Blackview and Ulefone have both promised to launch 5G models later this year.
