The pandemic has created a boom in home remodeling, as more time at home has changed the way people need their homes to function. Houzz reported a 58% increase in professional referrals for projects year-over-year. Wi-Fi Now Available In Moraine Valley Campus Parking Lots

PALOS HILLS, IL — To assist students and community members with accessing the internet, Moraine Valley Community College has added Wi-Fi to four parking lots on its main campus, and one at the Southwest Education Center (SWEC) in Tinley Park. Anyone is welcome to use the free Wi-Fi.

“Having access to the internet is critical in today’s world, especially since many of us are working and learning remotely now,” said Kam Sanghvi, vice president of Information Technology. “Moraine Valley has provided laptops and iPads to students who needed the technology, but many of our students and community members still do not have access to the internet, and that’s a critical piece to online learning.”

The lots outside of Buildings S and T (S1, S2, T1 and T2) on the east side of the main campus, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, and the main lot at SWEC are now Wi-Fi enabled. Signage near each lot will help direct users to the right locations. Once in the parking lot, users must stay in their vehicles to maintain social distancing.

To access the Wi-Fi, Moraine Valley students will log on using their college user name and email. Students who have previously connected to Moraine Valley’s Wi-Fi should connect automatically when entering the lot. All other people will connect using the MVCCGuest option.

Because of COVID-19, Moraine Valley’s buildings remain closed to the public, and this creates a void for people needing access to technology. “We are hoping this service will assist our students and community with their internet needs, and keep them on the path to success,” Sanghvi said.

Google to Take 30% of App Revenue in 2021

After some confusion—and after watching Apple take heat over its iOS App Store policies—Google is clarifying how and when it plans to take its cut of paid apps in the Google Play Store.

According to an Android Developers blog published today, any developer with an app on Google Play that has to do some “technical work” to integrate Google’s billing system will have until Sept 30, 2021 to comply. That means those developers can continue collecting direct payments from customers without having to give Google its 30% cut for the next year. That deadline will likely coincide with the release of Android 12; Android 11 rolled out widely earlier this month. Android 12 will also make it easier for developers to offer their apps on third-party app stores.

This new policy is part of a larger push on Google’s part to make its Google Play policies clearer to developers, and to continue its support for developers who also want their apps on other stores across multiple platforms. The 1-year “get out of jail free” card is really for businesses with a main physical storefront who had to move to an all-digital platform to stay afloat during the pandemic.

“We have heard feedback that our policy language could be more clear regarding which types of transactions require the use of Google Play’s billing system, and that the current language was causing confusion,” wrote Google Vice President of Product Management Sameer Samat.

Asian Snakes Spotted Disemboweling Toads Instead Of Swallowing Them Whole

For the first time, researchers observed snakes on three different occasions eviscerating toads instead of swallowing them whole. What could be behind these particularly gruesome attacks?

Snake is popularly known to eat its prey by swallowing it whole but for the first time, a team of researchers documented snakes that disemboweled prey instead of swallowing them whole.

In the study published in the journal Herpetozoa, the researchers describe three separate incidents during their observations in Thailand wherein they documented small-banded Kukri Snakes (Oligodon fasciolatus) using their enlarged posterior maxillary teeth to cut open their live preys.

“The snakes inserted their heads into the abdomen of the toads, pulled out some of the organs and swallowed them,” the researchers wrote, noting that the struggle between predator and prey lasted for hours.

Why did these snakes consume the toads this way? It could have something to do with what the snakes were eating. In all three cases, the snakes were eating Asian Black-spotted toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus), a large toad species known to secrete a potent toxin from their neck and back. As the University of Michigan’s Museum of Zoology notes, it’s possible that this is why the species does not have many predators.

As such, it could be possible that the snakes were avoiding being poisoned by the toads’ toxins.

But, the researchers also note of a fourth observation wherein the snake just swallowed a toad of the same species whole, the only difference is that the toad was a smaller semi-adult.
